Cavitation on surfaces

چکیده
Entrapment of gas bubbles at the liquid/solid interface plays a crucial role for fluidic systems when the volume to surface ratio goes down. Here, we report an investigation on the presence of air on hydrophobic surfaces in water. The gas pockets on such walls are expanded, and thus made visible, by lowering the liquid pressure, a phenomenon known as heterogeneous cavitation. The investigation is extended to the study of the formation and the dynamics of bubbles generated from well controlled nucle

Marine propellers display several forms of cavitation. Of these, propeller-tip vortex cavitation is one of the important factors in propeller design. The dynamic behaviour of the tip vortex is responsible for hull vibration and noise. Thus, cavitation in the vortices trailing from tips of propeller blades has been studied extensively. Under certain circumstances cavitating vortices have been ob...
متن کاملCavitation in elastomeric solids: II—Onset-of-cavitation surfaces for Neo-Hookean materials
In Part I of this work we derived a fairly general theory of cavitation in elastomeric solids based on the sudden growth of pre-existing defects. In this article, the theory is used to determine onset-of-cavitation surfaces for Neo-Hookean solids where the defects are isotropically distributed and vacuous. These surfaces correspond to the set of all critical Cauchy stress states at which cavita...

Using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at constant water chemical potential in combination with basic theoretical arguments, we study hydration-induced interactions between two overall charge-neutral yet polar planar surfaces with different wetting properties. Whether the water film between the two surfaces becomes unstable below a threshold separation and cavitation gives rise to l...
متن کاملBoundary lubrication of heterogeneous surfaces and the onset of cavitation in frictional contacts
Surfaces can be slippery or sticky depending on surface chemistry and roughness. We demonstrate in atomistic simulations that regular and random slip patterns on a surface lead to pressure excursions within a lubricated contact that increase quadratically with decreasing contact separation. This is captured well by a simple hydrodynamic model including wall slip. We predict with this model that...
متن کاملEffect of Cavitation on Hydraulic Turbines- A Review
Cavitation is an important problem in hydraulic machines that negatively affects their performance and may cause damages. Cavitation is a phenomenon which manifests itself in the pitting of the metallic surfaces of turbine parts because of the formation of cavities. In the present paper, a brief description of the general features of cavitation phenomenon is given and also discussed about the T...
